Youth Commission Minutes Apr. 2016

MINUTES
YOUTH COMMISSION MEETING
April 20, 2016

The meeting started at 9:35 am.

Present: Sandy Chipman, Jessica Knapp (via phone), Manuela
Michailescu, Recreation/Youth Dept. Director Carol Dennin, Assistants
to Recreation/Youth Dept. Director Rita Harkins and Ashley Sweeney and
Town Board Liaison Cindy Fornino.
Absent: Pam Stocking (mother passed away).

The minutes of the March 23, 2016 meeting were reviewed. Sandy Chipman
made a motion to approve the minutes and Manuela Michailescu seconded
the motion, which was approved unanimously.

Carol Dennin presented the Director’s Report; among the highlights:

• 116 kids attended the Easter Egg Hunt on March 26; thanks to Annie
and Jessica for being the “Easter Bunny” and “Penguin” this year

• April 16 and 23:
— Earth Day is underway with lots of volunteers cleaning up; roads
(except Queens Highway) seem to be improving.
— Manuela Michailescu related the situation she experienced (garbage
spread on the property, names found inside the big bag, situation and
proofs brought to Constable Rich Miller’s attention)
— Discussion regarding the difficulty of enforcing and/or
surveillance 24/7 – Cindy Fornino to bring up the issue
— Pizza party is on April 23 at 2 pm.

• Sign ups for “Wear a Hat” Mother’s Day Brunch on May 6 are going to
top last year’s numbers (55 signed up already); expecting to serve
around 90 people; help needed the Wednesday before the event

• Basketball program:
— Carol Dennin met with Mike Smith and ironed out some problems;
registration and ordering of shirts are going to be done at the
department’s office
— communication will improve and schedules will be made in advace for
parents, players and sponsors

• Summer program – a WOW!
ALL weeks being FULL, the department is struggling to give as many
children as possible a week or two in the program; they are
overwhelmed with calls and the waiting list continues to grow
— 42 children per week (raised from 35) now; 59 non-repeat names
registered
— checking with Supervisor Carl Chipman if it’s possible to use the
town’s car in order to accommodate more people/children for some trips
– positive answer
— former program director MaryAnne Gates and assistant director Shaye
Davis would come back on Mondays and Wednesdays (MaryAnne) and on
Tuesdays and Thursdays (Shaye)

• A sign for the Community/Recreation Center is needed – some people
don’t know where it is!

• Keep Pam Stocking and her family in our thoughts and prayers as her
mother passed away over the weekend…

The meeting adjourned around 10:40 am.

The next meeting is on May 18, 2016, 9:30 am at the Community Center.
