MINUTES
SENIOR & YOUTH RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING
September 25, 2024

Present: Marjorie Bogert, Melissa Guimaraes (who was appointed by the Town Board as SYR Commission member on September 12, 2024), Deborah Martin/Chair, Manuela Michailescu, Pam Stocking/Vice Chair, Ashley Sweeney/Director of the Recreation Dept., Bethany Dennin/Assistant Director Recreation Dept.
Absent: Jessica Knapp.

The meeting started at 9:35 am. Chair Deb Martin called the meeting to order after establishing that we have a quorum (5 out of 6 members being present).

The Minutes of the August 28, 2024 meeting were reviewed and amended — Marjorie Bogert made a motion to approve them as amended, motion was seconded by Pam Stocking and minutes were unanimously approved.

Ashley Sweeney presented the (written) DIRECTOR’S REPORT; among the highlights:

• Latest update on back-yard at Community Center — Quonset hut has officially been removed. Fence is taped off. Holes have been filled in, sandbox was tilled up, basketball net was replaced and the hoop repaired.
Thanks to Bethany and Matt Dennin for the sand donation and repairs; thanks to the Highway Department for the playground repairs.

• After School Program — has begun. We’re full this year with a waitlist. There are 35 kids enrolled (only 21 in the past!). Balloons hanging at the Community Center indicate their birthdays. Most of the counselors have worked here before. Welcome Madison Paddock to the team — she is doing a great job. Kids from the waitlist would be allowed if anyone drops out.

NEW BUSINESS — UPCOMING EVENTS (from the Director’s Report)

• Yoga Classes — starting in October. Yoga will drop to one class on Thursdays (this was the instructor’s choice). The class will be every Thursday at 10:00 am.

• Basketball Registration — to take place during the month of October. “Clinic” will cost $60 per participant and the “League” ( 9 years old and up) $80 per participant (same as last year). Sponsor requests have been sent out.

• Pumpkin Painting Class — October 11th, 5:30 pm — 7:00 pm. Help needed.

• Halloween Party — October 25th, 5:00 pm — 7:00 pm. Jessica hopefully can DJ and come at 4:00 pm; intention is to start the party early with the kids in the After School Program.

• Adult Painting Class — in October, details regarding the date to follow (class set for October 21st soon after the meeting).

• Heritage Day — on October 5th, 12 noon to 6 pm; Bethany’s report:
— the “kid activity tent” is going to be behind the Museum — face painting, pumpkin painting, how to make your own clothes, maybe a scavenger hunt
— help is needed for dividing pies on Friday before Heritage Day (October 4th, at the Community Center, around 12—1 pm).

• Thanksgiving Luncheon — Friday, November 22nd; save the date!

CHAIR’S REPORT
Chair Deb Martin announced that she is stepping down in December.

OPEN ISSUES / DISCUSSIONS — was the last point on the agenda:
— Manuela mentioned the membership issue — page of the SYRC to be updated on the Town’s website (as it’s full of errors).
— a schedule for attending children’s tent was prepared (different members indicating their preferred time slots).

ADJOURNMENT
Marjorie Bogert made a motion to adjourn, which was seconded by Pam Stocking and approved unanimously.
The meeting adjourned at 10:20 am in thanks to: Bethany and Matt Dennin, Highway Dept. (sand donation and repairs for back yard playground equipment).

Next meeting takes place on October 16th, 2024, 9:30 am, at the Community Center.
