SENIOR & YOUTH RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING
October 16, 2024
Present: Marjorie Bogert, Melissa Guimaraes, Deborah Martin/Chair, Manuela Michailescu, Ashley Sweeney/Director of the Recreation Dept.
Absent: Jessica Knapp, Pam Stocking.
The meeting started at 9:35 am. Chair Deb Martin called the meeting to order after establishing that we have a quorum (4 out of 6 members being present).
The Minutes of the September 25, 2024 meeting were reviewed (and spelling of “quonset” corrected) — Marjorie Bogert made a motion to approve them as corrected, motion was seconded by Melissa Guimaraes and minutes were unanimously approved.
Ashley Sweeney presented the (written) DIRECTOR’S REPORT; among the highlights:
• Heritage Day — The Pie Contest went very well; congratulations to all the winners! Thanks to Melissa Guimaraes, Rita Harkins and Supervisor Erin Enouen for helping in the pie tent. The “kids activities tent” behind the Museum was busy and successful; thanks to Commission members Marge Bogert and Jessica Knapp for their help and to Anna Henebery for face painting.
Thanks to Manuela for taking pictures.
• Pumpkin Painting Class — was on October 11th, 5:30 pm — 7:00 pm. 19 kids signed up, we all had a lot of fun; each child got to pick their own pumpkin to paint and take home. Thanks to Commission members Marge and Manuela for participating.
• Yoga Classes — going back to two classes for now, with a slight time change. First class will be 10-10:45 am and the second class will be 11:15 am — 12 pm every Thursday.
• Basketball Registration — is on-going. There are approximately 60 kids enrolled already, but we anticipate many more (we get close to 120!).
NEW BUSINESS — UPCOMING EVENTS (from the Director’s Report)
• Adult Paint Class — on Monday, October 21st. This class filled up immediately; Bethany will most likely plan to do another one very soon for the people who weren’t able to get in.
• Halloween Party — October 25th, 5:00 pm—7:00 pm. Jessica will DJ.
• Thanksgiving Luncheon — Friday, November 22nd, 11 am—1pm; people have already begun to sign up. Hopefully everyone is able to make it to help out this year (to help please come at 9 am).
CHAIR’S REPORT
Chair Deb Martin asked about the dates of the Holidays parties — Ashley indicated that the Youth party is on December 6th and the Adults Party on December 13th.
OPEN ISSUES / DISCUSSIONS — was the last point on the agenda:
— Manuela asked if there is any ceremony on November 11th for the Veterans Day; she would reach out to Town Supervisor Erin Enouen.
— the SYRC membership list on the Town’s website remains incorrect; expiration term for Jessica Knapp could not be found even by the Town Clerk.
— Manuela mentioned that town resident Salvatore (Sal) A. Giambruno, who was home-bound but enjoyed luncheon meals brought to him, passed away.
— Ashley reminded Commission members that next month they have to nominate and vote for the Mary Lee and Sue Matson Youth Awards (to be presented on Dec. 6th at the Youth Holiday Party).
