SENIOR & YOUTH RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING
November 15, 2023
Present: Deborah Martin — Chair, Jessica Knapp, Manuela Michailescu, Recreation Dept. Director Ashley Sweeney, Recreation Dept. Assistant Director Bethany Dennin.
Absent: Marjorie Bogert (absent with a cause), Sandy Chipman, Cynthia Lampman, Pam Stocking (absent with a cause).
The meeting started at 9:33 am.
Chair Deb Martin presented the Agenda of the meeting and called the meeting to order after establishing that we do NOT have a quorum (only 3 out of 7 members present).
The minutes of the October 18, 2023 meeting were reviewed; to be approved when we have a quorum, together with the September 2023 minutes.
This was mostly a working meeting — hands on help for the Thanksgiving Luncheon on Friday, November 17th.
Ashley Sweeney presented the DIRECTOR’S REPORT; among the highlights:
• Youth Halloween Party — on October 20th, 5—7 pm was very well attended and successful (with the mummy-wrap part of the party being the funniest!).
• Pumpkin Painting Class — on Tuesday, October 24th, 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. About 22 youth participated and showed how much creativity they have. Thanks to Marjorie Bogert and Deb Martin for assisting during the class and to Manuela for taking photos.
• Thanksgiving Luncheon — on November 17th, 11:30 am — 1:30 pm. About 110 people registered so far. Those who want to help, please arrive by 9 am.
• Wreath-Making Class — on November 29th, 1 pm.
• Nominations for the “Susan Matson Distinguished Youth Award” and for the “Mary Lee Friend of Youth Award” are needed. Commission’s vote is going to probably take place via email as the “Susan Matson Distinguished Youth Award” has to be presented at the Youth Holiday party on December 8th, 2023, before the next meeting. Proposals/nominations for both awards are welcome.
NEW BUSINESS — UPCOMING EVENTS (from the Director’s Report)
• Youth Holiday Party — on December 8th, 5:30 pm—7:30 pm
• Seniors Holiday Breakfast — on December 15th,10:00 am—12:00 pm
OPEN ISSUES / DISCUSSIONS — was the last point on the agenda:
• Veterans Day & Honor Roll unveiling — on November 11th, was an emotional, impressive event, extremely well attended, very well organized by Town Clerk/Town Historian Kate Gundberg with help from the Town Board. (Ashley, Manuela and Deb participated to the event).
Then hands-on help was provided for the Thanksgiving luncheon this coming Friday.
The meeting adjourned at 10:30 am.
Jessica Knapp made a motion to adjourn, which was seconded by Manuela Michailescu and approved unanimously.
Next meeting takes place on December 13th, 2023, 9:30 am, at the Community Center.
