CELEBRATION OF LOCAL HISTORY
Hear ye, hear ye! Saturday, October 7, 2006 has been officially proclaimed Heritage Day in the Town of Rochester. Spearheaded by Friends of Historic Rochester, the day-long series of events and activities, that will provide interest and fun for everyone, is also sponsored by other community groups such as the Accord Fire District and the Town Youth Commission.
Beginning with a Pancake Breakfast at the Accord Fire Hall from 8-11 a.m., the next event of the day at 10 a.m. is a Regatta on the Rondout Creek for which prizes will be given. (Anyone wanting to participate in this event should call Bob Cairo at 626-4922.)
Activities at the Friends of Historic Rochester Museum, 12 Main Street, Accord, will be happening between 10 am and 3 pm. The centerpiece of the day for local history buffs will be a Walking Tour celebrating historic Accord: “Accord Then and Now”. Tours will begin at the Museum, where a descriptive Brochure Guide will be available. Visitors taking the walking tour of Main Street will see enlargements of old photographs from former times at each of the properties, and learn about previous residents and activities along the street. For example, who remembers when Honda introduced its new model in 1977, the “Accord”, in front of 16 Main Street? Also featured will be extensive displays of memorabilia from the O&W Railway and the Accord Farmers’ Cooperative (later Agway). Several locations on Main Street will be open to the public, including two antique shops and two art studios.
At the Museum itself, local history memorabilia will be displayed and on sale, and genealogical research guidance will be available. On the grounds of the Museum, features will include an art show and quilt show, candlemaking, a Country Store, draft horses with historic machines, and antique cars on display.
Meanwhile, at the Fire House there will be a number of ongoing firemanic demonstrations. At the Fire Hall, following breakfast, lunch will be available. Activities for children, organized by the Youth Commission, will be located in the vicinity of Fire Hall.
In two locations, at either end of Main Street, several local musical groups will be adding to the festivity of Heritage Day 2006.
There is no admission charge for these events. Free parking is available in the Municipal parking lot. Generous sponsors of Heritage Day in the Town of Rochester include community residents, businesses and organizations. For more information, call 626-7104, 687-9998 or 626-3140.
