MINUTES
YOUTH COMMISSION MEETING
March 22, 2017
The meeting started at 9:40 am.
Present: Sandy Chipman, Jessica Knapp (15 mins late), Manuela Michailescu, Youth/Recreation Director Carol Dennin, Recreation Aides Ashley Sweeney and Rita Harkins, and Town Board Liaison Cindy Fornino.
Absent: Pam Stocking.
When quorum was established, the minutes of the February 15, 2017 meeting were reviewed. Sandy Chipman made a motion to approve the minutes, Manuela Michailescu seconded the motion, which was approved unanimously.
Carol Dennin presented the Director’s Report; among the highlights:
• St. Patrick’s Day luncheon was a huge success; over 120 people (90% of them seniors) attended, enjoyed the food and live Irish music.
• Summer Program is 3/4 full; week 2 is the fullest; some weeks have 3 spots available, other weeks 10 available.
Non-residents can register starting April 1. Children ages 5-14.
A male counselor is needed to round off the staffing (7 adults).
• Easter Egg Hunt is on Saturday, April 15, starting at 12 at the Town Hall; Youth Commission meeting scheduled for April 12 for assistance with treat bags for children.
• Earth Day will be two weekends, April 15 and April 22. The Earth Day Celebration/pizza party takes place on Sunday, April 30 and incorporates an energy efficiency program (cooperation between Environmental Conservation Commission and the Youth Commission/Recreation Dept.)
• After School program — School Board is aware of our program, considered the best; we have over 60 kids, 4 staff members; following a disturbing situation (brought to the Town Supervisor’s attention), security bell and Constable were needed to prevent disruption from unruly parents and to protect the children from experiencing this type of behavior. There is no access inside the Center for parents. A “Parent code of conduct” has to be signed and filed.
COMING EVENTS
• Mother’s Day “Wear a Hat” brunch on May 12 at 10:30 am would include a “Fashion Show” (dresses created by Lolly Chase)
We may have a “fancy dress/hat” prize…
The meeting adjourned around 10:25 am.
Next meeting takes place on April 12, 2017, 9:30 am at the Community Center.
