Youth Commission Minutes Jan . 2013

MINUTES YOUTH COMMISSION MEETING January 24, 2013
The meeting started at 9:50 am.Present: Jessica Knapp, Pam Stocking, Susan Matson, Manuela Michailescu and Recreation/Youth DepartmentDirector Carol Dennin.
Absent: Sue Bruck, Tim Bruck, Martha Roberge.
After establishing that there is a quorum for the meeting, a vote was taken on the motion made (initially on August16, 2012, when there was no quorum) by Pam Stocking for Manuela Michailescu to be Secretary of the Youth Commission. Motion was seconded by Sue Matson and approved unanimously.
Sue Matson then talked about the possibility to have Rev. Aaron Schulte, the new shared minister for RochesterReformed and High Falls Community Churches, who is very interested in youth and a great story teller, come, meetstaff and commission members and discuss about a potential cooperation.
Next point was a short discussion about membership and the need to have new volunteer commission members(among the names suggested as prospective members: Tracy Turk Domaszowec, Lolly Chase, Marie Blank).
As Director’s report Carol Dennin summarized the Recreation/Youth Department’s activities in the near future:
-Valentine’s Day – party for kids only on February 14-St. Patrick’s luncheon -Friday, March 15
-Annual Easter Egg Hunt – Saturday, March 30
-party/brunch for Seniors – for Mother’s Day, on Friday, May 10
– efforts to help Jeremy Reynolds ght a rare form of cancer (Basketball coach Mike Smith is organizing a Youth Basketball Fundraiser/live auction on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the Kerhonkson Elementary School Gym).
Carol Dennin also stressed the great need for funds (department is struggling with budget cuts and the fact thatfunding received from the County was reduced to only $700 per year from $7,200 few years ago).Jessica Knapp suggested a pot luck event, “Investing in your future,” organized by the seniors’ group.
Other issues: Sue Matson talked about raising people’s awareness of kids’ issues, programs and concerns (and indicated thatwould be Manuela Michailescu’s “job”); she suggested sponsorships, article in Blue Stone Press, etc.
Pam Stocking proposed including “Thanks” – to donors, sponsors – in newsletters.Jessica Knapp took further that idea and proposed a permanent “column” in the newsletters, “Opportunities tomake a difference,” which would present specic examples of ways to help (volunteer for events, sponsor yourfavorite program, donate healthy snacks, playground balls, or pots, pans, paper items for the kitchen/CommunityCenter, etc.).

The meeting adjourned at 11:40 am.
Next meeting: Thursday, February 28, 9:30 am, Community Center.
