Youth Commission Minutes – August 2017

MINUTES
YOUTH COMMISSION MEETING
August 30, 2017

The meeting started at 9:30 am.

Present: Sandy Chipman, Manuela Michailescu, Pam Stocking, Youth/Recreation Director Carol Dennin, Recreation Aides Rita Harkins and Ashley Sweeney, and Town Board Liaison Cindy Fornino.
Absent: Jessica Knapp.

The minutes of the June 21, 2017 meeting were reviewed. Pam Stocking made a motion to approve the minutes, Sandy Chipman seconded the motion, which was approved unanimously.

Carol Dennin presented the (written) Director’s Report; among the highlights:

• The Summer Program was a huge success
— 48+ children attending each week
— new to the program was “trip teens” — transportation available for trips to various attractions for children that aged out of the program, 14 years and up; they had a great time…
— MaryAnne Gates would cooperate with the Department in making staff decisions next year
— having a trained Life Guard would help for many trips (like Minnewaska, Ulster Landing where swimming was not allowed for lack of Life Guard)
— good coverage in the local press (photos published in both summer issues of the Blue Stone Press, August 4 and 18/cover)

• After school program — only 2 spots available as of that day (Rochester registrations were first)
— capped at 40-45 youth
— in an effort to maximize revenue, weekly charges were introduced: $20 per youth, $25 for a family of 2 and maximum charge of $30 for families of 3 or more.

UPCOMING EVENTS

• Rondout Valley Lions Club and Recreation Dept. will be helping with a fundraiser/Fall festival for The Guiding Eyes for the Blind — September 23, 2017, 10 am to 4 pm at the Veterans/Town Park
— arts, craft, food vendors
— children’s activities, fun, games, craft table, hair braiding, hay rides, playground
— pony rides by Leslie Harris
— Live music with Ben Rounds and The Spillway Band (1-4 pm)

• HERITAGE DAY — in cooperation with Friends of Historic Rochester, September 30, 2017 at the Accord Firehouse, 10 am to 3 pm

The meeting adjourned around 10:10 am.
