Youth Commission Minutes Apr. 2015

MINUTES
YOUTH COMMISSION MEETING
April 23, 2015

The meeting started at 9:35 am.

Present: Sandy Chipman, Jessica Knapp, Manuela Michailescu, Pam Stocking, Carol Dennin – Recreation/Youth Dept. Director, Assistant Director Rita Harkins and Town
Board liaison Cindy Fornino (arriving at 9:50 am).
Absent: Sue Matson.

The minutes of the March 26, 2015 meeting were reviewed. Pam Stocking made a motion to approve the minutes as amended and Sandy Chipman seconded the motion, which was
approved unanimously.

The Director’s report was presented.

Among the highlights:

— The Egg Hunt was very successful in spite of the bitter wind.

— SUMMER PROGRAM – filling up very quickly (we cap it at 42-43 kids/week); as of that day there was a waiting list for all but week 7.
— Lanika Brown was hired to replace Elaine Sammuels as Assistant Director for the summer program; she has 7 years experience, the necessary training and can move up
as Director next year. Training for this year is on June 8 in Ellenville.
— The benches/seats of the newly acquired bus would have to be covered (as all are damaged).

— EATING HEALTHY TRAINING – The after school staff joined the department in a training session on eating healthy and the importance of daily exercise for youth.
Instruction – by Stacey Craft (from the Dept. of Health) – focused on the benefits of healthy eating for youth; she also donated various activity/exercise equipment.
We are at the Bronze level of development.
— APRIL Events:
~U Saturday, April 25, 2 pm – Earth Day celebration event at the Community/Recreation Center – organized together with ECC, presenting speakers and activities
(over 50 people are involved and it makes a difference; would be presentations, displays, music, oven-made pizza, all at the Community Center)

— MAY Events
~U Mother’s Day “Wear a Hat” Brunch – Friday, May 8, 10:30 am – 12 pm.
~U Memorial Day Parade and the “Fallen Soldier’s Table” moment presented by Jessica Knapp at the Veterans Park – Monday, May 25; time for the ceremony at the
Veterans Park to be checked; microphone definitely needed.

— SEPTEMBER Events
~U Jennie Bell Pie Festival takes place on Sept. 19 and the Youth Department would take over for the Town the “Talent Contest” (no longer sponsored by Key
Bank but by a business association offering $600); Jessica Knapp to attend a meeting with Richard Travers.

The meeting adjourned around 10:40 am.
Next meeting: May 21, 2015, 9:30 am at the Community Center (so that it’s before – not after – the Memorial Day falling on May 25).
