Youth Commission Minutes Apr. 2014

MINUTES
YOUTH COMMISSION MEETING
April 24, 2014

The meeting started at 9:40 am.
Present: All five members – Sandy Chipman, Jessica Knapp, Sue Matson, Manuela Michailescu, Pam Stocking and Recreation/Youth Department Director Carol Dennin.

After establishing that there is a quorum for the meeting, the minutes of the March 27, 2014 meeting were reviewed by all. Pam Stocking made a motion to approve them and Sandy Chipman seconded the motion, which was approved unanimously.

Director Carol Dennin presented highlights of her report:

— The “Spring Break Slumber” sleepover at the Youth Center (on April 17) went very well, with male and female counselors

— Easter Egg Hunt on April 19 was extremely successful – a beautiful day, about 140 kids participated, 2000 eggs were (deeper!) hidden; Jessica Knapp was there to help

— April 26 is the second Earth Day, followed by the pizza party

— Mystery Murder Dinner Cafe show – on the following day, April 25; 41 people made reservations and/or got tickets (but we may get close to 50 people); it’s going to help some children as sponsorship for the summer program

— considering a young counselor (Dylon) – who has a special connection with children and who leaves for military service – as potential first recipient of the Sue Matson Distinguished Youth Award (in this case award to be offered earlier than the usual, scheduled date). Carol stated that in her 17 years as Youth Department director, only 3 boys were as natural and magnetic like Dylon with children…

The meeting continued with members’ hands-on help in cleaning tables, chairs and preparing them and the room for the Mystery Murder Dinner presentation the following evening.

The meeting adjourned around 11:50 am.

Next meeting: Thursday, May 22, 2014, 9:30 am at the Community Center.
