HPC and Friends of Historic Rochester Public Program
Ward Mintz briefed members on preparations for the event featuring a lecture on African American travels during the Jim Crow era by Dr. Gretchen Sorin on Friday, September 15th. Dr. Sorin’s lecture will focus on the Green Book used by many African Americans travelling throughout the region during segregation. The program will include a discussion of the local historic African American resorts like the Peg Leg Bates Country Club and the Wicky Wacky Club. Rene Bailey, a singer who often performed at Peg Leg Bates and who had recently performed at the Rosendale Theater has agreed to sing at the event. W. Mintz agreed to write the press release for the program and the group discussed different ways of publicizing the event, including outreach to specific groups.
The efforts by the State Historic Preservation Office and W. Mintz to protect the Peg Leg Bates
Country Club were discussed.
Schoolhouses
Efforts to preserve the Union Free District No. 1 School built in 1878 and currently used as part of the Alligerville Firehouse were discussed. C. Chipman reported that there are funds available to the Town to build an emergency shelter. The goal is to remove the current firehouse from the front of the schoolhouse and con-struct a new free standing firehouse. The Town is waiting to hear from the architects and engineers on the pro-ject. Art Lapp provided a good deal of very helpful information about the Alligerville Schoolhouse. A discus-sion of other schoolhouses and properties on Main Street Accord ensued.
