Special Announcement – Fire Update

Hopefully this will be my last update on the Minnewaska Fire. I was briefed this morning
by Ranger Stratton of the DEC and received some good news. The fire is now 100% contained. A
fire-line encompassing the fire has been finished by bulldozer and there is about ¼ of an acre
of unburnt fuel left. This should allow the fire to be extinguished or burn itself out. Route
44/55 is closed today as there are still crews working but should open tomorrow.  There will
still be smoke probably for the next couple of days so don’t be alarmed if you see or smell
it.

This fire could have had a much worse outcome if it wasn’t for the hard work and
cooperation of those involved. I’d like to thank Ulster County Emergency Management, Ulster
County Fire Coordinator Charlie Mutz, the DEC Rangers, the State Police, and especially the hard
working firefighting men and women from Accord Fire District, Kerhonkson Fire District, and all
of our neighboring districts for the fine work they did. I’d also like to thank the ladies
auxiliaries of our local fire districts as well as volunteers from the Kerhonkson-Accord First
Aid Squad for their support.Incidents like this bring out the best in our community and these
people are the best. It’s an honor to serve in such a wonderful community.

Thank You,

Carl Chipman
